The largest fish in the world

The whale shark is the largest fish on Earth and can grow over ten meters long. Due to its enormous size, it reminds many people more of a whale than a typical shark.

A gentle giant

Despite its size, the whale shark is harmless to humans. It primarily feeds on plankton and small organisms that it filters from the water while swimming.

Name with two meanings

The name "whale shark" therefore combines two characteristics: it belongs biologically to the sharks but has a size and appearance that is more reminiscent of a whale. Therefore, this impressive marine inhabitant carries both terms in its name.
