The oceans as climate regulators

The world's oceans play a crucial role in the global climate system. They absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus act as a natural buffer against climate change.

Storage by plants and plankton

Especially algae, seagrass meadows, and phytoplankton bind CO during photosynthesis. A portion of this carbon is stored long-term in the ocean, for example in the seabed.

Protection of marine ecosystems

Healthy marine ecosystems are therefore also important for climate protection. The protection of seagrass meadows, mangroves, and other coastal habitats helps to maintain the oceans' ability to store carbon.
