Scientific Naming
The names of many marine animals come from scientific classification. Researchers often give new species Latin or Greek names that describe certain characteristics.
Names Based on Appearance or Behavior
Many animals are named after their appearance, color, or behavior. Examples include animals with striking patterns, unusual shapes, or characteristic movements.
Honors and Discoveries
Some species are also named after people, such as the researchers who discovered them or important supporters of science. Thus, many names also tell a piece of the discovery history of the seas.
