A milestone for ocean conservation
The UN High Seas Treaty, adopted in 2022 after two decades of negotiations, is now in force. It creates a legally binding framework for the protection of biodiversity in international waters, which cover two-thirds of the oceans. The centerpiece is marine protected areas to achieve the global "30-by-30" target.
From words to actions
With over 80 ratifications, the treaty is welcomed. However, environmental organizations emphasize that consistent implementation is crucial to effectively protect marine ecosystems.
