Rare “Pink Meanies” washed up on Texas coast Several specimens of the giant jellyfish Drymonema larsoni were discovered in the Gulf of Texas.
The animals can weigh over 20 kg and have tentacles up to 21 meters long. Their sting is only mild, according to marine biologist Jace Tunnell. The pink jellyfish follow their primary prey, the moon jellyfish, and die quickly when these are absent.
Only recognized as a separate species in 2011, they live in warm waters such as the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, and off the coast of South Africa. They do not survive when the water temperature drops. A rare natural spectacle – iridescent and fleeting.
