The LOBSTgER Initiative
A new MIT Sea Grant project, LOBSTgER, blends AI with underwater photography to document this shifting ecosystem. Using only original field images, the team trains custom generative models to create scientifically grounded visuals that reveal marine life in new ways.

 

Art, Science, and Technology United
The project draws on precise biological observation, artistic photography, and advanced computation. By learning real lighting, colors, and textures from thousands of underwater photos, the models generate imagery that is both accurate and emotionally engaging.

 

Enhancing What the Eye Cannot See
LOBSTgER can create new images or improve captured ones by restoring detail and clarifying subjects clouded by murky water. This helps photographers, researchers, and educators build clearer stories of life beneath the surface.

 

A Tool for Awareness and Conservation
As the Gulf of Maine transforms, visualizing its changes becomes essential. LOBSTgER shows how AI and traditional photography can work together to deepen public understanding and support marine conservation in a rapidly changing ocean.
