Sarcophyton trocheliophorum is a soft coral with characteristically fleshy, rounded polyps that resemble a mushroom or a shell. The surface is often smooth and soft, with long, retractable polyps that respond quickly to touch.

The coral forms large, bulbous, umbrella-like colonies with a smooth to slightly knobbly surface. The color varies from light yellow to greenish to brown. The polyps are situated on the "umbrella" and can expand significantly.
Certain fish, such as the coral filefish, and some mollusk species that nibble on the polyps.
Not toxic to humans, but sensitive individuals may experience skin irritation from contact with the coral's mucus.
