Litophyton arboreum belongs to the leathery soft corals. It forms robust, tree-like colonies with a strong trunk and fan-like branches. The surface is densely covered with small polyps that extend clearly in good current.

The coral resembles a small underwater tree in its growth form. The color ranges from beige to gray to green or brown tones. In the open state, the polyps appear like a soft, movable surface.
Predators include certain butterfly fish and other reef-dwelling species that eat the soft tissues of corals.
