The shortfin mako is considered the fastest shark in the world, reaching speeds of over 70 km/h. Its name 'oxyrinchus' means 'sharp snout'.

It has a streamlined, spindle-shaped body. The back is metallic dark blue, the belly is white. The snout is long and pointed, the teeth are narrow and visible, even when the mouth is closed.

Makos can spectacularly leap out of the water. They hunt fast fish like tuna and swordfish.
