The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world. Its body is strongly flattened from the sides and resembles a large round disk. It is often seen lying at the water’s surface “sunbathing,” which makes it easy to observe from boats. Ocean sunfish mainly feed on jellyfish.

The ocean sunfish has a very short body without a true tail fin. Instead, it has a broad, rounded fin structure at the rear of its body. Its skin is thick, rough, and usually gray to silvery in color. Its dorsal and anal fins are tall and help it move slowly through the water.
Large sharks, orcas, and sea lions
Harmless to humans and not venomous
Ocean sunfish can weigh over 2 tons. They are often cleaned of parasites by cleaner fish or seabirds. Although they appear large, they are slow and peaceful animals.
