On the west coast of the island of Gozo, a very special dive site reveals itself.
Like a clearing overgrown with flowers in a deep forest, the coral-covered "Coral Cave" extends 60 m into the rocks at a depth of 17 m.
While the rocks tower around the 30 m wide entrance, the floor inside is covered with bright sand that highlights the beautifully colorful corals even more.
While admiring this coral painting, one should never forget how fragile these structures are – therefore, nothing should be touched and buoyancy should be monitored.
The air bubbles we release can also damage the corals, so it's better not to be mesmerized by the coral walls for too long.
At the back end of the cave, a narrow passage leads further into the rocks – this part is only suitable for divers with special cave diving equipment and is quite dangerous.
In 1999, two divers lost their lives there.
